Bio-Ferra™ is Cyto-Matrix's innovative liquid iron supplement. Similar to the body's own Ferritin molecule, this polysaccharide-iron complex provides optimal delivery of iron to the body while significantly reducing negative side effects and safety concerns commonly associated with iron supplements. This advanced liquid formulation is pleasant-tasting, well tolerated and easily incorporated into daily routine. Bio-Ferra™ can rapidly replete iron deficiencies and is an ideal supplement to a vegan/vegetarian diet.
Iron Deficiency Anemia
The body requires iron for multiple physiological functions throughout life. Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia in North America. Recent data suggests that 5% of Canadians have insufficient iron stores (measured in ferritin levels) (1). This is of particular concern for females, with 13% of adolescents and 9% of those from 20-49 years demonstrating depleted levels (1). Children, pregnant women and vegans/vegetarians are also known to be at greater risk.
The most common symptom of iron deficiency is fatigue. Other manifestations include lightheadedness, shortness of breath, headache, cold hands and feet, palor and weakness. In children, deficiency can lead to increased risk of infection and impair physical and cognitive development.
Supplementation and Bioavailability
Correcting a deficiency can be difficult due to bioavailability in supplementation and unwanted side effects such as stomach upset, constipation, nausea and vomiting. This is common to iron salts such as ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulfate. Bio-Ferra™ can address these frequent problems and increase compliance with its unique liquid polysaccharide-iron complex.
Cyto-Matrix's Bio-Ferra™ is an innovative polysaccharide-iron complex. This complex was developed to improve bioavailability of iron and, thus, decrease the unwanted negative effects of iron supplementation (2). It is soluble at an acidic pH making it ideal for human digestion (3). Examination via X-Ray diffraction showed the complex's similarity to ferritin, explaining its improved bioavailability (3). Polysaccharide-iron complex can supply high concentrations of iron with great tolerability.
To further enhance absorption and patient compliance, Bio Ferra comes in a light-tasting liquid preparation. In this form, the iron bypasses the digestive system and is readily available for absorption in the blood.
Iron can be toxic when levels exceed normal limits in the body; therefore, supplementation should be appropriate to need. Toxicity is of particular risk to infants and children due to accidental overdoses. Studies evaluating lethal dose of iron have revealed doses exceeding 5000mg/kg have not caused a lethal response whereas doses of around 230mg/kg have demonstrated lethality in 50% of test subjects with iron salts (4).
One study evaluated 810 reported cases of potential overload of the polysaccharide-iron complex to the American Association of Poison Control and there were no corresponding adverse effects (5).
